Monsieur's Maps · No. VI
A city built on water and good taste. This is the Stockholm I keep — the grand hotel across from the palace, the design house on Strandvägen, the great warship raised whole from the harbour, and the island where the whole country goes to remember how to be Swedish.
Ett Hem
'A home' — and it is: a townhouse where you help yourself to the kitchen, read by the fire, and forget you're in a hotel at all. The most Swedish luxury there is.
Svenskt Tenn
Josef Frank's prints on Strandvägen since 1924 — the printed linens, the brass, the tea. I could furnish a whole life from this one shop.
Grand Hôtel
The grande dame across the water from the palace — the Verandan smörgåsbord, the harbour light, and the Nobel laureates who all sleep here in December.
Stadshuset
The City Hall on the water — the red-brick tower with the three crowns, and the Blue Hall where they hold the Nobel Banquet each December.
Vasa Museum
The warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and rose again, whole, three centuries later. Standing under her is one of the great sights of Europe.
Skansen
The open-air museum on Djurgården — old Sweden reassembled house by house, plus the bears and the wolves. Where the whole country goes to remember itself.
