Monsieur's Maps · No. VII
A city of ten thousand rickshaw bells. This is the small piece of Dhaka I carry — Dhanmondi and its lake, the fried chicken we crossed the whole city for, the hotel we made home for a week, and the wide brown Buriganga, where all of Bengal seems to push off from at once.
Dhanmondi
The green heart of the new city — the lake at dawn with the joggers, the lovers on the bridges at dusk, and everyone you know, somewhere along the water.
The chicken place
The fried chicken we crossed the whole city for — crisp, spiced, and gone in minutes, eaten under a fan on plastic stools. (Tell me the name and I'll set it in ink.)
Ambala Inn
Home for a week — the cool marble lobby out of the heat, the breakfast that never ended, and the window full of the roar of the street below.
Sadarghat
The great river terminal on the Buriganga — a thousand launches nose to nose, the ferry horns, and the brown water carrying half the country somewhere at once.
